Wein & Co

The Client:

Wein & Co, established in 1993 by Dkfm. Heinz Kammerer, was a game changer in selling wines, sparkling wines and liquors due to the combination of retail stores and wine bars in the 1990s. In 2015 Wein & Co operated 23 shops (6 with wine bars). It had 271 employees and a market share of 30 % with wine specialist shops. Sales were up to 45 million EUR. After 2010 Dkfm. Heinz Kammerer added two more sales channels: internet sales, which in 2016 already contributed 15 % to total sales, and gastronomy, i.e. pursued an hybrid approach (shops + bars + internet + events + B2B). Every year the Mondo Vino, a wine exhibition in the MAK organized by Wein & Co, is a must for all oenophiles.

The Project: The strong expansion, an ongoing increase in inventory, problems implementing SAP, an unfavourable financing structure and increasing competition both from food retailers (Spar, Merkur, Billa) and from trendy and owner operated wine bars led to liquidity problems in 2016. Wein & Co ordered a prognosis for its continued existence from the Management Factory. The prognosis was positive and starting point for a debt restructuring in early 2017. After implementing many measures of the Management Factory’s restructuring plan Dkfm. Heinz Kammerer sold Wein & Co in 2018 to the Hawesco – Holding which is listed at Frankfurt stock exchange.
